Ignatian Conversations: Interfaith dialogue
How does one
maintain one's faith while living in a community of diverse beliefs? In a
recent address to a MAGiS gathering in Melbourne,
Fr John Dupuche spoke about his own experience of living in an inter-religious
community, and pondered the ways in which we can interact with people of other
religions, and the different attitudes we as a society can apply to
the podcast here.
'We don't renege
on our faith or our tradition - on the contrary, we become more faithful', he
said. 'In fact, the differences make us perceptive to our own faith.'
Dupuche said that arrogance and exclusiveness, which are often present in the Christian
Church, are not Christian virtues and should be avoided when dealing with
people of other religions.
Dupuche recently established an interfaith household together with Swami
Sannyasananda, a yogi of the Satyananda lineage, and the Venerable Lobsang
Tendar, a Buddhist Gyuto monk from Tibet / Dharamsala. He is Chair of the
Catholic Interfaith Committee of the Archdiocese of Melbourne and has recently
presented for publication a book on mantra meditation which draws together the
teaching of Christianity and Kashmir Shaivism on the mantra.
