A teacher at St Ignatius' College in South Australia, and a Jesuit priest with a life-long interest in science, Fr Kelly says to talk about creation today, one must also understand the current scientific understandings about life and the universe.

‘There's got to be a conversation between the scientific and the religious', he says. ‘You can see that the original insight of the book of Genesis - that there is one God, and God is creator, and everything is due to this one God - can sit quite easily with the present scientific picture.'

He says science has done a great job of providing us with an understanding of the laws of nature and processes, but questions about God and why the universe exists are "unscalable walls" for science.

‘Such questions as, why has something come from nothing, why are the laws of nature just right (for life to develop), is there a purpose or isn't there a purpose, is there a God or isn't there a God - these are questions for philosophy, answerable through reason alone, or through faith.'
